The intimidation factor involved in joining sports leagues at the adult level can take the fun out of the game. The emergence of social-athletic groups like kickball and dodgeball leagues, however, has brought the focus back to the playfulness of playing a sport. The competitive nature is still prominent in the games, but the ultimate goal for most is to socialize and meet new people while getting a bit of exercise.
I recently joined a team organized by the WAKA Kickball organization here in LA. Although I marvel at the athleticism demonstrated on the field and the heart-warming teamwork/sportsmanship amongst the players, I must admit that I most look forward to the post-game happy hours each week.
The reaction that I get when I mention my participation in the sport is most marked in the facial expressions. Instantly, the complexion seems to brighten, get a bit flushed and then the eyes widen in childlike eagerness. It's pure playground nostalgia.
