A new sugar substitute may be making an impact in the EU and US soon, if Coca-Cola and Cargill have their way. Stevia, a little green herb indigenous to South America and widely used in Asia, is now being developed for mass consumption, under the brand name, Rebiana.
Stevia is 100% natural, contains zero carbohydrates, zero calories, zero chemicals, and a zero glycemic index. The herb is generally viewed as safe for consumption by people with Type II Diabetes, and while the plant has not been available in the US or EU, it has been consumed widely in Japan for over 30 years, with no side effects.
Is there really a need for a new sweetener? With Splenda already pretty popular, will the market really take notice of Stevia? With Coke spearheading the drive to make Stevia (Rebiana) usable in the US, you can guarantee that this will be the next big thing. Like Splenda, it can be used to cook and bake with, and undoubtedly will find its way into a myriad of products.
