Equinox - Soho
69 Prince St
(between Broadway & Crosby St)
New York, NY 10012
This has been my favorite gym for the last few months. 1) It's conveniently between my office and apartment, and 2) a ton of room for functional training.
When I first checked this location out a few years ago, they had chained up the kettlebells so members could only use them with trainers. That was a turn-off, but they've since changed their tune. In fact, they have dedicated a pretty nice sized area for functional training.
With the exception of the Yoga studio and men's locker room, the gym is laid out all on one floor. It can get kind of crowded, so you don't have the option of moving floors like at Greenwich or Crunch Lafayette, but it's still pretty big.
The gym is always super clean. The only real issue with the gym has been thefts in the locker room (though that's not Equinox's fault). Guys don't lock their sh*t up...Equinox did move to address this by having security monitor the locker room, and hopefully people learned their lessons and bring a lock. (Locks are $5; if you pay for an Equinox membership, you better be able to invest in a lock).
